Course Description
Black Rock Creek Golf Course is a fairly level course, and a great walk, with a number of water hazards, traps and bunkers. There's lots of birds, ducks, and some geese. You may also spot some hawks and a pair of golden eagles while out there. That's a bonus for playing at BRC!
There are three teeing regions to challenge all golfers: Gold = 5527 yards
White = 6286 yards
Green = 6657 Yards
The course has 4 par 5's and equal number
of par threes. Water comes into play on seven of these holes and several
of the par 4's. Our course superintendent says there are 63 greenside and
fairway sand traps; now throw in some strategically placed large trees and a
player can find mo
re
trouble than he/she may want. If you're a "hooker" Black Rock Creek will
be a real challenge, there is more trouble on the left side of greens and
fairways.
This fairway trap on #18 looks up at 3 more greenside "beaches." Eighteen also sports a fast green with sweeping breaks.
Hole #2 is a long par 3, about 210 yards from the white tees, however, it can be stretched to about 240. The green is a long hour-glass shaped putting surface that has ample traps on both right and left. The green is usually quite fast and has some unseen large breaks in it. Bogey is a good score! It's the #3 handicap hole on the course.
Number 3 is a short par five but the first
240 yards are uphill Distance from the white tees is 485 yards, but players from
the white and green tees must d
rive
over two ponds to reach safety, and if your tee shot goes to the right you may
have significant tree trouble; if it's to the left you can easily reach a large
fairway bunker that is very difficult to get out of and gain any distance.
The green is protected by several large traps on both the right and left.
An easy birdie hole for the low handicapper but it can easily sneak up on you
and give you a double bogey.
Number 6 is a dogleg right par 5, our signature hole; while it is only 511 yards from the white tees and 525 from the greens, the hole has significant par protection by out of bounds on the left nearly the whole length of the hole. Longer hitters better stay away from the right rough because there is a water hazard and pond that runs all the way to the green. When making your approach shot to the green make sure you don't go too far right, the ball can roll off the green into the pond. Over the green is a disaster, either water or out of bounds awaits; however, if you're really lucky you'll find one of the sand traps instead. Par here is an excellent score. Gee, what a friendly hole!
Both #7 and #8 are excellent driving holes and are dogleg right. Number 8 green is one of our largest, and there's a deep bunker guarding the right front of the green. Par 3 Number 9 is our #5 handicap hole. It is a 165-180 yards from the white tees, most over water, with 3 traps waiting to catch you and a slick, undulating green.

Wow, the front nine was FUN . Now after a quick snack bar break you're out to number 10. Big hitters like to try and drive the green, it's only 283 from the white tees. But Black Rock Creek guards the green ferociously and will catch all the errant drives. Most players prefer to lay up with a shorter club and hit their second to the green over the creek. It's really an easy hole as its #16 handicap ranking attests but you can make a double or triple bogey very quickly.
Number 11 is a dogleg right with OB if you land in the front yards of the homes on the left. "Hookers" beware, be ready to play a provisional ball. Eleven is the #2 handicap hole on the course and that is a well deserved #2. Par here is outstanding and a bogey is really OK. The green is fairly small but is very undulating and quick.
Twelve is a short par 3
with an elevated tee, the green is again guarded by Black Rock Creek.
From the tees you cannot see all the green. A long hour-glass shaped
green with many small humps and dips awaits the good tee shot while the creek
and two traps will grab the errant ones.
Thirteen is a straight-away 513-530 yard par 5 with big tree trouble on the right. Longer hitters have to make a decision to lay up in front of the creek that is 60 yards in front of the green or to go for it. Again there's trouble on the right, another pond ! Again, you may find the green hard to read with some areas where the breaks are surprising, plus it's always fast.
Fourteen is our longest hole playing 510-545 yards from the white tees. There's a lake on your left ! Fourteen is dogleg left with difficult rough and trees on the left past the lake and heavy rough on your right if you hit through the fairway. Deep bunkers are on the left front of the green. Nice hole!
When visiting pros play BRC they consider #15 to be one of the most difficult holes they play all year. It's not exceptionally long, only 380 from the white tees and 436 from the green tees. It's on the other side of the lake from #14 so a hook can put your ball in the "large ball washer." As you approach the green you'll find it tucked behind the end of the lake and that it's long and narrow. There's a large pot bunker on the right end of the green and a drainage ditch running over to the lake on #13. That leaves a narrow opening for you!
I really love this next hole, #16. It's wide open and straight away, 402 yards, par 4. Your second shot is to a large, receptive green that drops off on both sides and the back. So don't go right, left, or over. It's the last hole you can really let out the shaft on, there's no real serious trouble.
Now, #17 is different. Black Rock Creek runs the entire length of #17, plus there are large, deep bunkers on the right side of the green. If you try to stay away from the creek on the right you may wind up chipping to a narrow green that's below your feet. This makes it very hard to hold and then you're looking at that creek again! Good Hole !!!
Number 18 is an outstanding par 4 finishing hole. It is a tree-lined 370+, with fairway waste-ways on the left and right. Many players don't realize they need to club up for the approach to the green, it's uphill and a short shot doesn't usually bounce onto the green. The green is well guarded by 3 traps and is a challenge to putt. That's why it's #4 on the handicap chart !
Enjoy your play at Black Rock Creek Golf Club !
